Homemade Facial Masks

Cleansers are emulsifiers that clean up the vestiges or make-up dirt and grime that are present on the surface of the skin. They tend to leave your skin fresh, cool and scrupulously clean. The simplest way to cleanse your skin is by using home made recipes right off your kitchen shelf. Homemade facial masks often contain clay. Clay absorbs impurities and helps to get rid of the stubborn blackheads in addition to cleansing the skin.

Types of Homemade Facial Masks:

There are three types of facial masks that can be used to deep cleanse the skin.

Gel Masks: These usually have a base of herbs, fruits, vegetables or minerals. After application, they tend to dry to a fine film which can be pulled off easily. Gel masks leave the skin petal soft and are ideal for dry skin.

Cream Masks: These masks are especially effective in smoothening and refining the skin texture. They have a creamy base and help fight blemishes.

Cleansing Masks: They are used for a deep cleansing treatment. These cleansing masks are the ones that have a clay or earth base and are regarded as the best ones. Clay has strong drawing properties which bring out impurities from the pores and absorb the excess sebum from the skin. It is used to get rid of the stubborn blackheads. Allow these masks to dry on your skin and wash off with lukewarm water. This gently exfoliates the dead cells and rejuvenates the skin.

Homemade Facial Masks for everyone:

Yogurt and Egg Mask:

Ingredients: 1 egg white

4 to 5 tablespoons of yogurt

Method: Beat the white of an egg until stiff. Add in the yogurt and mix well.

Application: Apply all over face and neck. Wipe clean using a muslin cloth dipped in hot water, followed by wiping it with the muslin cloth saturated in cold water.

For oily Skin: add one teaspoon of lemon juice.

For dry skin: Add one teaspoon of honey.

For combination skin: Make two portions of the paste, one with lemon juice for te T panel and the other with honey for the rest of the face.

Turmeric Cleansing mask:

Ingredients: 1 ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder

1 ½ tablespoon of lemon juice

Method: Combine both to make a paste.

Application: Apply over face and wash off after ten to fifteen minutes.

Oatmeal Mask:

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon oatmeal

1 tablespoon cucumber juice


Method: Mix the oatmeal with enough milk to make a paste. Beat the egg yolk and blend it with the oatmeal paste. Leave it on the skin for fifteen minutes. Rinse off with tepid water.

The egg yolk softens the skin and oatmeal helps to cleanse and nourish the skin.

For dry skin: Add a teaspoon of honey.

For oily skin: Add a teaspoon of lemon juice.

Alternatively, you may add a teaspoon of dissolved gelatin to the oatmeal paste instead of egg yolk.

Kaolin Mask:

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons kaolin

2 tablespoons cucumber juice

Method: Combine both ingredients and apply over the face and neck. Wash it off after ten to fifteen minutes depending on your skin type.

All purpose cleansing mask:

Ingredients:1 tablespoon oatmeal

1 tablespoon cucumber juice

Method: Mix together and make a smooth paste. Apply it over the face and allow it to dry for fifteen minutes. Rinse off with cold water.

Fuller’s earth Mask:

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons crushed fuller’s earth

3 tablespoon milk

Method: Mix the ingredients into a paste and apply over the face and neck. Leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes before rinsing it off.

Cleansing Mask for oily skin:

Ingredients: ¼ cup oatmeal (finely powdered)

½ cup of yogurt

2 teaspoon of lemon juice

Method: Stir the oatmeal into yogurt and chill it.

Application: Apply to face and neck. Leave on for half an hour. Rinse off wit tepid water into which the lemon juice has been added.

Cleansing Mask for dry skin:

Ingredients: 1/2 teaspoon of Brewer’s yeast

1 tablespoon honey

½ teaspoon cider vinegar

2 tablespoons sour cream

2 egg yolks


Method: Combine all the ingredients and mix well.

Application: Spread a thin film of olive oil or sesame oil over the face and then apply this mask on it. Leave on for fifteen to twenty minutes and rinse it off with milk and water.
