Hair coloring tips for beginners:

If you are coloring your hair for the first time, it is advisable for you to go in for a semi-permanent hair color. These colors stay intact for up to 6 weeks and do not alter the original color of your tresses.

You must select a shade that is 2 to 3 times lighter than your original hair color.

It is best to buy a home coloring kit in order to color your tresses with a professional finish.

Read the instructions manual very carefully before beginning the process of coloring.

Conduct a strand test in order to find out if you are allergic t the colorant. This will also give you a fair idea as to what color your hair will become once it is colored.

Before applying color, gather everything you will need such as brushes, combs, a huge mirror, a buttoned up old shirt, a large towel, a rag, cotton swipes and latex gloves.

Make sure you keep a watch in front of you to keep track of time.

Hair coloring tips for application:

Brush your hair thoroughly to get rid of any tangles or knots.

Mix the ingredients of the color kit as directed in the manual.

Centre part your hair and lift sections of the hair and apply color starting at mid length and working your way to the roots and ends.

Leave the color on for 45minutes to one hour and wash.

Remember to rinse the color thoroughly.

If you are using semi-permanent color do not shampoo your hair the same day. It is better to shampoo it after 24 hours, once the color sets in.

Techniques you can use:

There are several hair coloring techniques you can use for coloring your hair if you don’t want a uniform effect.

Highlights: This was probably one of the first innovations in the field of hair coloring. This technique is used to brighten up flat looking tresses and makes the hair shinier and healthier looking. Highlights look great in warm shades of bronze, hazel, honey, copper, gold, hot pink and red. They can be created with all types of colors and can enhance your look instantly.

Twilights: This technique is meant to enhance lighter hair color with a subtle change. Twilights mellow down extremely bright shades by adding a few streaks of darker colors.

Lowlights: These are used to add depth to hair color. They add a darker tone and mellow down the overall look of brightened hair. They also spice up dull looking hair. Up to three colors can be used to create the desired effect by coloring a few strands of hair by weaving then through a weave cap. Foiling chunks can also be used to create a dramatic effect.

Chunking: This technique makes use of large sections of hair and deposits new color on them. It gives a dramatic look to your tresses and can be done with vibrant colors such as red, pink, neon colors, turquoise, green, yellow etc.
