Getting rid of Brittle and Dry Hair

Every individual’s hair is as different as their fingerprints. Hair varies from person to person in terms of color, texture and volume. The various types of hair are normal hair, greasy hair, dry hair and combination hair. Dry hair is caused by various external factors such as perming, exposure of hair to excessive heat, bleaching, use of strong shampoos, frequent shampooing, exposure to environmental factors such as pollution, UV radiation of the sun etc. Dry hair invariably has split ends and is always coarse in texture. It needs frequent deep conditioning treatment, along with oil treatment of the scalp using almond oil, olive oil or coconut oil. A protein rinse is also a good option for tackling this option.

Diet for Hair:

Diet plays a key role in hair care and an imbalanced diet will soon manifest itself in the state of your hair. Every strand of hair is composed of a protein called keratin. Therefore, it is essential to intake a diet rich in proteins and essential fatty acids. You must include lots of eggs, milk, meat, liver, fish, cheese, green leafy vegetables, chicken, carrot, butter etc. in your diet on a daily basis. Vitamin A, D, E and C also play a vital role in maintaining the health of hair. Cod-liver oil capsules can also be included in the diet. 10gms of gelatine dissolved in one glass of tomato juice will help your scalp and hair.

Brushing: Good brushing keeps your hair looking at its best. It is recommended to brush the hair from the hairline. You must always start by combing the hair to free it from the tangles. Brushing your hair regularly increases blood circulation and stimulates the scalp resulting in the distribution of natural oils to the hair ends. Regular brushing helps to retain, stimulate and replace the natural oils of the body.

Scalp Massage: A scalp massage on a regular basis is a must for healthy, strong and bouncy hair. It helps improve circulation and fights split ends and brittle hair. You can go in for a rubber scalp massage or a finger massage.

Rubber scalp massage: A Rubber scalp massager has a small circular pad with rubber needles protruding out and a handle. Using this massager enables you to massage your scalp without harming the sensitive tissues of the head. A finger massage can be done by using the pads of your finger tips in small circular movements in back or forth motion. A fifteen minute scalp massage with oil twice a week before shampoo must form a part of your hair care program.

Oiling: In order to nourish the roots and give a healthy sheen to the hair, regular oiling is a must. Dry hair is caused by perming, bleaching, color treatments as well as exposure to sun, chlorine, heat styling etc. It tends to benefit from regular application of oil. There is a wide range of oils such as almond oil, olive oil, coconut oil, aloe oil, and walnut oil etc. that can be used for dry hair.

Shampoo: This is the best way to clean your hair and get rid of all the dirt. There is a misconception among individuals that washing the hair regularly dries it. On the contrary you must shampoo your hair as often as needed. Dry hair needs a shampoo comprising of Lecithin which is present in egg yolk. A protein based egg shampoo is ideal for dry hair.

Protein Rinse: Protein rinse is also a great way of lubricating and strengthening dry hair.

Wheat Germ Rinse: Take four table spoons of powdered wheat germ and tie it in a muslin bag. Soak the bag in one pint of water for three hours. Then squeeze the bag and use the solution to rinse your hair.

Whey after – shampoo rinse: Collect and strain whey and use it as a rinse after shampooing your hair. This protein rich rinse is great for treating dry or brittle hair.

Frizzed out hair is usually damaged and dull. You can revive the lost luster and regain your confidence by taking proper care of your hair. The key to getting a flowing mane lies in eating right, proper grooming and cleaning your hair regularly.
